Blue Streak Recommended Motors
Motors are not included in this kit. See the chart below.
Motor
Diameter (mm)
Altitude (feet)
Why / When Choose This Motor?
13
294
Great first-flight using the smaller 13mm diameter motors, but not recommend for younger children (the smaller 13mm diameter motors are harder for them to prep for flight). It won't fly out of sight.
13
598
The highest flying 13mm diameter motors. Slowest lift-off speed of all the possibilities.
13
590
Fastest lift-off speed of all the possibilities. Best choice for breezy conditions.
Estes
1/2A6-2
18
238
Great first-flight using the 18mm diameter motors. It is great for small launch fields. It won't fly out of sight.
18
568
Another good motor for the rocket's first-flight. High lift-off speed for breezy conditions.
18
538
Great motor for the rocket's first-flight, and best for smaller children. This will be the least expensive launch of all the motor possibilities.
Estes B4-4
18
1063
Slowest lift-off speed for B size rocket engines. Good choice for calm wind.
Estes B6-4
18
1088
Good choice for breezy wind. But get ready to chase the rocket.
18
1115
Good choice for breezy wind. It will be a high flight, but not "out-of-sight."
Estes C6-7
18
1760
One of the highest flights if there is no wind. You may not get it back unless you have a big field.
18
1776
One of the highest flights when there is wind. Launch only if you have a really big field, or you're a good runner.
18
2298
Warp speed! Rocket will reach 650 miles-per-hour with a wicked roar. Your friends will get whip-lash watching this motor.
See the video below for help in selecting rocket motors. Rocket motors are sold separately from the kit. If you are unsure which one to pick, start with the one recommended for the First Flight, and then another for a more impressive launch. Most motors listed in this chart are available through Apogee Components. For other motors that are not listed here, download the RockSim file to see if it will work in this rocket kit. See also Technical Publication #28 for guidance on selecting appropriate rocket engines other than those listed in this chart. If you don't already have Technincal Publication #28, give us a call, and we'll be happy to let you download it free (you have to ask though).

Blue Streak

The Blue Streak is an extremely simple to build rocket that will give you straight, stable flights every time you launch it.

This is a real rocket kit that you build yourself. It isn't one of those beginner rockets that are totally made of plastic. As you build it, you will learn the basic guiding principles of rocketry, so that you will be able to tackle rockets that are more complex and daring.

Some of most useful techniques that can be learned by building this rocket are how to work with basic rocket building tools like a hobby knife, sandpaper, scissors, a ruler, and glue. These will be the same tools you will use on every other rocket you construct, whether it be other simple rockets like the Apogee Aspire, or the highly complex Saturn V.

If you learn the techniques on this simple rocket, you'll save a lot of money later on when you build the bigger more expensive rockets. You won't ruin them during construction, they'll be much better looking, stronger, lighter, and will fly faster and higher.

Blue Streak Lift-off
The Blue Streak might be small but it makes a BIG IMPRESSION!

The Blue Streak can be powered by a variety of rocket engines, which leads to another important rocketry skill that you'll need later on. That skill is how to select the proper rocket engines for the model. Many new modelers make the mistake of using the biggest motor possible on the first flight. But if the launch field is too small, the rocket will often drift out of sight. The Blue Streak is a lightweight rocket, and can use the smaller rocket motors; so it won't be lost on the first flight. And it comes with an extra motor mount to allow use of the smaller engines that are a different diameter than the standard motors.

But if you're really daring, the Blue Streak is rugged enough to accept the powerful Apogee D3 rocket engine. It is 16 times more powerful than the "1/2A" engines, and will blast this model to over a half-mile into the air! Or you can try the powerful Apogee D10 rocket motor, which gives a maximum speed of Mach .95 (nearly supersonic). It will rip off the pad with a load thunder-crack type of roar, and seconds later, it will be just a tiny speck in the upper reaches of the atmosphere. Spectators around the launch site will swear you broke the speed of light!

With die-cut balsa fins and a rugged plastic nose nose, this model is built sturdy for a high number of flights and a maximum amount of fun! And, oh-yeah, it's educational too...

Assembly is easy - Just watch the video! - We've created a series of FREE quicktime videos that you can watch right now to see how easy a skill level 1 kit is to put together. By watching these videos, you'll learn some of the basic techniques you can use on other rockets too. You'll find these videos at our "getting started" page. Check it out!

Kit Features

Plastic nose cone - This nose cone is a special shape; it is a true parabolic nose cone. This is rare in rocketry, as most cones are ogive shape. The parabolic shape is great for both low and high speed flight. The nose cone has a smooth surface, so it doesn't require any additional sealing. It is ready for flight.

Die-Cut Balsa Wood Fins - These fins are lightweight and can be easily airfoiled for the best performance. By being pre-cut, you'll save time when assembling this model. The whole thing can be put together with ordinary non-toxic wood glue, making it safe for every member of your family.

The model also comes with a high-strength Kevlar® Shock cord. Kevlar is six times stronger than steel, and is also fire-resistant. It can easily withstand the high heat of ejection, ensuring the rocket descends as a single piece. This makes for a very durable rocket that can be launched again and again.

The 2 inch wide, 24 inch long Aluminized polyester streamer sparkles in the sunlight making it easy to track this rocket both in the air and when it lands on the ground. And it allows the rocket to come down quickly and safely.

Tools needed to assemble this rocket kit:

  • Pencil
  • White Glue or Wood glue
  • Masking Tape
  • Hobby Knife
  • "Finishing Supplies" like paint and sandpaper.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Apogee Blue Streak kit:

Q. What launch pad should I use to launch the Blue Streak?

A. We recommend the Sky Launch System. This rocket flies just fine off this inexpensive launch pad.

Q. Is this kit available in bulk-packs for schools and youth groups?

A. Unfortunately, we do not offer a bulk-pack version of this kit. The closest model available in bulk packs is the Super Six kit.

Q. I need help selecting motors. What should I do?

A. Watch this YouTube video.

What is a RockSim Design file? The RockSim software gives you a lot of information about the flight characteristics of this rocket: how high, how fast, where it will land, how will it react to wind, etc. The "design file" is intended to save you time. All the parameters (size, shape, weight, fin design, etc.) of this rocket have already been entered into the RockSim program, and saved as an electronic database file. You can just open it up in your copy of RockSim and start loading different rocket motors to run launch simulations. It's fun and educational to see the rocket zoom skyward, even before you built it.
