See the video below for help in selecting rocket motors. Rocket motors are sold separately from the kit. If you are unsure which one to pick, start with the one recommended for the First Flight, and then another for a more impressive launch. Most motors listed in this chart are available through Apogee Components. For other motors that are not listed here, download the RockSim file to see if it will work in this rocket kit. See also Technical Publication #28 for guidance on selecting appropriate rocket engines other than those listed in this chart. If you don't already have Technical Publication #28, give us a call, and we'll be happy to let you download it free (you have to ask though).

Quest Payloader One

The Quest Payloader One™ is a great first rocket for beginners because it has so many features that make it easy-to-build. This includes pre-slotted tubes so there is no cutting involved, and through-the-wall fin-tabs that allow perfectly aligned fins.

Besides being quick-to-build, the sleek design of the rocket kit also offers a see-through payload bay so you can launch cool things like: bugs, action figures, and scientific experiments. It is fun to build, and exciting to fly!

You'll love this kit if you have a young modeler in your family, or if you are a teacher. It has all the classic parts of a traditional model rocket, like the balsa wood fins, but is easier to assemble.

Assembly is easy - Just watch the video!
We've created a series of FREE quicktime videos that you can watch right now to see how easy a skill level 1 kit is to put together. By watching these videos, you'll learn some of the basic techniques you can use on other rockets too. You'll find these videos at our "getting started" page. Check it out! Avion build session.

Why Use Pre-Slotted Tubes?

The first big advantage is that it eliminates the need for a hobby knife during construction. You don't need to worry about young modelers cutting themselves.

Pre-slotted tubes also means that when parts are assembled, they'll be in the proper location. For example, the little slot on the yellow engine mount tube will mean the engine hook is positioned in the right location. And the slots on the white tube will mean the fins will be in the right location for maximum stability.

Plus, when the fins are placed within the slots, you'll know the fins are aligned perfectly straight. This means the launch will be perfectly straight-up, with no spinning or looping! Besides being safer, the rocket will fly higher too. Imagine the applause you'll get when they see how straight your rocket flew; like it was riding a rail into the air.

The through-the-wall fins also have another benefit. They make the rocket tougher, so the rocket can land harder without them popping off the tube.

Pre-Slotted Tubes allow the kit to be put together quickly.

Through-the-wall fins are more durable.

LASER Cut Fins
Another great feature of this kit is the Laser Cut Fins. You see, by cutting with a laser, instead of die-cutting, all the fins are perfectly sized and shaped. This is important on this kit because each fin utilizes a small tab on the root edge that must pass through a slot on the body tube. The cut must be perfect, or the kit will not go together quickly for you or your kids. Laser Cut fins insure all the fins are exactly the same size.

Other Kit Features

Plastic Nose Cone - The smooth plastic nose cone requires no finishing. Its ogive shape is very efficient for high speed rocket flights.

See-Through Payload Tube - Allows you to see the cargo that you put inside your rocket. Whether it be a bug, toy, or scientific experiment, you'll be able to quickly see if the cargo survived the high speed flight into the sky.

Colorful pressure-sensitive decal - No cutting required. It is pre-cut, so all you need to do is peel it off the backer paper and stick it down on the rocket.

Real balsa wood fins - Balsa wood is very lightweight and can be airfoiled by sanding, to reduce the drag forces on the kit. Did you know that when using balsa wood, you're applying real aeronautic principles: using the lightest weight materials so the rocket flies faster and higher into the sky?

Color-coded parts makes assembly easy. Students don't need to know technical names of the individual parts. They just grab the one that is the right color.

High Quality Parts Make a Great Rocket!

Durable Plastic Parachute - The kit comes with a colorful chute that makes it easy to see your rocket as it comes down from super-high flights.

Simple Color Scheme - Because of the white paper body tube, you can even decorate your rocket using magic markers! This makes it great for younger kids.

The model also comes with a high-strength, Kevlar® Shock cord. Kevlar® is six times stronger than steel, and is also fire proof. It can easily withstand the high heat of ejection, ensuring the rocket descends as a single piece. This makes for a very durable rocket that can be launched again and again.

Comes down nice and soft!

What is a RockSim Design file?

The RockSim software gives you a lot of information about the flight characteristics of this rocket: how high, how fast, where it will land, how will it react to wind, etc. The "design file" is intended to save you time. All the parameters (size, shape, weight, fin design, etc.) of this rocket have already been entered into the RockSim program, and saved as an electronic database file. You can just open it up in your copy of RockSim and start loading different rocket motors to run launch simulations. It's fun and educational to see the rocket zoom skyward, even before you built it. Rocket Motors

This is a reminder that this kit does not come with rocket motors. See the chart at the top of this page to see which motors will work in this particular rocket kit.

Nomex Wadding

While not required, this would be a useful addition to this kit. If you don't use a heat shield, you'll have to use disposable wadding to protect the parachute from the heat of the ejection charge. And for a large diameter kit like this, it will take a lot of disposable wadding.

Nomex Wadding

AltimeterOne

See how high your rocket flew! This is the one altimeter you'll use in all your rockets because it does not require a separate payload bay. It is far more durable than any other altimeter because it is encased in ABS-plastic. It also is the first inexpensive altimeter to have a LCD screen that displays the altitude that the rocket reached during flight. Better get two, because your friends are going to steal this out of your range-box!

Pratt Hobbies Microbeacon

Looking for a small rocket locator? This is an audible beacon that screams out a loud siren to let you know where your rocket is. It is great for small rocket that land in tall grass. It also includes a flashing light so you can find rockets lost at night too.

Ejection Baffle

An ejection baffle cools the gases from the motor so that you don't need to put recovery wadding in the rocket for the flight. Think of it as permanent wadding!

Ejection Charge Baffles

Epoxy Clay

While it has a 1,001 uses around the house, it works great on rockets to make super-strong fillets where the fins attach to the rocket. Better than regular epoxy because it stays in place and doesn't ooze all over the rocket. So you can get perfect fillets on all your fins, without having to do them one at a time.

Fix-It Epoxy Thumb
Piston Launchers

Get another 5% increase in altitude just by launching from a piston launcher! A piston launcher converts the hot exhaust gases from the rocket engine into high-pressure that kicks the rocket into the air at a faster velocity. This recycling of the exhaust gases is cool, and it gives your rocket a higher flight.
