If you are unsure which one to pick, start with the one recommended for the First Flight, and then another for a more impressive launch. Most motors listed in this chart are available through Apogee Components. For other motors that are not listed here, download the RockSim file to see if it will work in this rocket kit. See also Technical Publication #28 for guidance on selecting appropriate rocket engines other than those listed in this chart. If you don't already have Technincal Publication #28, give us a call, and we'll be happy to let you download it free (you have to ask though).

Sunward CFX-Six Footer!

Make no mistake, this is the tallest low-power rocket we sell! I guarantee people will come running up to you at the next launch yelling "cool... how long is that thing!". They'll gaze up, higher and higher into the sky as they follow the lines of this sleek rocket into the sun. And you'll be able to say, "It's a Sunward CFX-Six Footer!, and it's half the price of other super-roc style kits."

When they look up, all they'll see is a long thin beauty of rocket that reaches from the ground to an astonishing height. They'll gasp. They'll applaud.

The Sunward CFX-Six Footer! is always a majestic flight and sports that classic "longneck" rocket shape. Take it to your next club meeting and everyone will want to heft it, sight down its long, beautiful lines, and ask "How high?" Take it to a high power launch and fly it on an E or F and you may even get some inquiries from the guys who fly the big hardware, like "That's taller than my $1500 winter project... and how much did you pay?"

There's another benefit to owning a Sunward CFX-Six Footer! While it has Empire State-like length, the rocket is well under a pound at lift-off. It doesn't require a special waiver to launch, nor does it require clusters of expensive motors. Wherever or whatever launch you go to, the Sunward CFX-Six Footer! is a legal model rocket. So when there is no waiver and you can't take out your really big rockets, you can still get that overpowering giddy feeling of reaching fantastic heights and getting people to notice what you've done. You'll come home with a nice feeling, knowing you wowed a lot of folks.

The Sunward CFX-Six Footer! is also an easy-to-assemble and fly rocket. If you're pressed for time and need to build several different rockets for the launch this coming weekend, you'll find that it goes together quickly. You'll probably finish it in half an evening, giving yourself plenty of time to work on other rocket projects too.

CFX Sixfooter Size

This is really a good rocket. If you're looking for a good addition to your low power fleet, this should be a top choice. Lift-off has that classic "slow, realistic look" and construction is easy. Your main enemy while building this rocket isn't the complexity, craftsmanship challenges, or anything like that, it's ceiling fans! Seriously!

If you are a parent, and you want to give your kids a bigger rocket to work on, the Sunward CFX-Six Footer! is a great choice. As your child builds it, they will learn the basic guiding principles of rocketry, so that you will be able to tackle other rockets that are more complex and daring.

Kit Features

Long, Sleek Balsa Nose Cone - Good requires wood.

Laser-Cut Balsa Wood Fins - These fins are lightweight and have cardstock reinforcement to provide long-term durability. They are pre-cut so you'll save time when assembling this model. The whole thing can be put together with ordinary non-toxic wood glue, making it safe for every member of your family.

2" long Couplers - Since the couplers are nearly twice as long as the ones in the Estes Mean Machine™, it's easier to get the body tubes glued together straight.

Big, Bold, Beautiful Self-Adhesive Decal - The decal gives this rocket just the right visual "snap"!

Large 3/16" Launch Lug - Because this is a bigger model, you'll have larger lugs on the side of the rocket. This helps stabilize the rocket so it doesn't sway in the wind prior to launch.

18 inch Parachute - The perfect size for reasonable recovery time without damage from a too-fast descent.

Assembly is easy - Just watch the video! - We've created a series of FREE Quicktime videos that you can watch right now to see how easy this type of kit is to put together. By watching these videos, you'll learn some of the basic techniques you can use on other rockets too. You'll find these videos at our "getting started" page. Check it out!

Frequently Asked Questions about the Sunward CFX-Six Footer! kit:

Q. What launch pad should I use to launch this rocket kit?

A. Since this is a big rocket, you'll need very stable launch pad. We offer a couple of choices: the Aerotech Mantis Launch Pad, and the Estes Porta Pad-E.
Estes Mid-Power Launch Pad

Q. What launch controller can I use to ignite the motors?

A. We offer two different controllers that can be used for mid-power size rockets. The Aerotech Interlock and the Pratt Hobbies GO-BOX Controller.

Q. I'd like to split this in half and epoxy a bulkhead in the central coupler so it's easier to transport in 3-foot sections and less susceptible to damage, while providing a long, tall payload bay. Does this sound like a good idea for the Sunward CFX-Six Footer!?

A. We recommend this build option. In addition to the benefits listed above, there is less air for the ejection charge to compress, resulting in more reliable ejection of the parachute.

Q. I need help selecting motors. What should I do?

A. Watch this YouTube video.

What is a RockSim Design file? All the parameters (size, shape, weight, fin design, etc.) of this rocket have already been entered into the RockSim program, and saved as an electronic database file. You can just open it up in your copy of RockSim and start loading different rocket motors to run launch simulations. It's fun and educational to see the rocket zoom skyward, even before you built it. Actual Customer Comment:

"I just wanted to let you know that I received a superior rating at the Wilmington College District Science Day! I will now be advancing to the state level at OSU in May. The Rocksim Software, PerfectFlite Altimeter and the books were used extensively for this project. I have already used the Strap-On Booster video that my dad ordered for me last week and am working on a rocket with it already! Thanks again!" -- Ian Cowdrey
