Getting Started In Rocketry (videos)
These videos will show you how to build a simple rocket like the Apogee Avion model rocket. You will learn techniques in these videos that very few modelers know, and you'll be able to teach them to other modelers.

Don't get too worried, you do not have to follow this step-by-step. The videos show how to get a really slick paint finish on the rocket. But you don't have to get this indepth on the rocket you make.

Quicktime Movies:

  • Part 1: In this first video you'll see how to create the engine mount, and getting ready to sand the balsa wood fins. Duration: 10 min 13 sec. (22.2 MB)

  • Part 2: This video shows how to sand the fins and apply the sanding sealer to the fin surface. This is a critical step in getting that glossy surface that all modelers strive for. Duration: 9 min 41 sec. (21.9 MB)

  • Part 3: This video picks up where the fin sealer was applied. Now you'll see how to do the final sanding. This section concludes with tack-gluing the fins and the launch lug to the body tube of the rocket. Duration: 9 min 4 sec. (19.8 MB)

  • Part 4: Now it is time for the application of the glue fillets that add strength to the fins. This makes it harder for them to pop off the rocket due to hard landings. While the glue is drying, it is time to assemble the two-part plastic nose cone. Finally, you'll see one of the more common techniques used to fill the spirals in the paper tubes of the model rocket. Duration: 9 min 30 sec. (21.6 MB)

  • Part 5 This step shows how to apply the sandable paint primer. It is important to pick up the technique of this step, such as how to spray on the paint and how to hold and rotate the rocket. This video references our other video-book: Building Skill Level 1 Model Rockets which can be purchased from our web store. Duration: 9 min 7 sec. (20.2 MB)

  • Part 6: With the primer complete, it is now time to paint the model rocket kit. This particular rocket uses two colors. So you'll see how to carefully mask off the model and apply the second paint color. Be sure to watch closely to pick up the subtle techniques of painting a rocket so you can teach the techniques to other modelers. Duration: 10 min 41 sec. (23.2 MB)

  • Part 7: In this video, you'll learn how to remove the masking tape from the painted rocket and how to apply sticker-type decals to the model rocket. Duration: 6 min 12 sec. (13.6 MB)

  • Part 8: This is the conclusion of the construction of the Apogee Avion model rocket kit. You'll see how to assemble the plastic parachute and attach the shock cord to the nose cone. This video references our other video-book: Building Skill Level 1 Model Rockets which can be purchased from our web store. Duration: 9 min 57 sec. (22.6 MB)

Actual Customer Comment:

"My relationship with Apogee Components is certainly in a fledgling state at this time, but I will say this; Apogee Components has my business because of the amount of in depth information available on their web-site and post customer service. When I first decided to look into model rockets, I checked out most all the web-sites and found I would always return to Apogee Components. After my first order was placed, I soon realized the truth in what Tim Van Milligan kept saying about Apogee Components high level of customer service and their desire to help anyone with an interest in model rocketry. The folks at Apogee definitely do it right. Fact is, if I wasn't so busy with my retirement and new found hobby of rocketry, I believe I would be applying for a position at Apogee Components....Thanks to all at Apogee!"
