Pratt Hobbies Go-Box Controller

Pratt Hobbies GO BOX Launch Controller

Are you looking for a rugged controller to launch your mid-power size rockets? The Pratt Hobbies GO BOX launch controller is the one for you! It is simple to use, and since it hooks directly to a car battery, it provides plenty of electricity to fire off even the most stubborn igniters.

I've been waiting for a controller like this for a long-long time. We used to sell the Estes E-Controller for use on mid-power rockets. But I didn't like that it used four AA size batteries. In cold weather, it could be finicky about supplying juice to fire off igniters.

On the other hand, the Aerotech INTERLOCK™ Controller is a bit expensive at a retail price of $65.00. The Pratt Hobbies GO BOX is a great alternative. It has all the features of the Aerotech INTERLOCK™ Controller, but at an affordable price.

The GO Box consists of three parts: the control box, safety key, and the ignition cable.

The yellow control box is connected to a 12v power source. The ignition wire is laid out along the ground between the control box and the launch pad. 25 feet of ignition wire provides a safe distance between launch pad and spectators.

The safety key must be inserted in the control box for the system to operate, and is kept under control of the person resposible for the launch at all times.

Safety key

The GO Box has large battery clamps for hooking up to a standard 12-volt car battery. This supplies plenty of voltage and current to set off even the most finicky motor igniters; even on cold days.

When you are ready to launch, the safety key is plugged into the control box. A buzzer sounds to indicate that there is a complete circuit through the igniter. When the launch button is pressed, full power goes to the igniter and sets off any electrical igniter. It is about as reliable as you'll get!

What is a Launch Controller?

The launch controller supplies electricity to the igniter that fires off the rocket engines. NEVER use a match and fuse to launch a rocket. A rocket is always ignited electrically so that you have control when a rocket takes to the air. I can't tell you the number of times that I've had to abort a launch at the last second because we heard a aircraft flying around. We had to know where the aircraft was in order to avoid a safety hazzard. You can't do that with a fuse.

The GO BOX has a large red button that you push when you are ready to launch. It allows you to scan the area for hazzards, and then when you punch it, the rocket will jump skyward.

Push the big red button!

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. Are there other ways to power the Go-Box besides a car battery?

A. Yes. You can use two 6v lantern batteries, a 12v 2 amp hour gel cell, an 8 pack of AA cell batteries, or a jump-start battery from an auto parts store. See the Tip of the Fin in Newsletters 177 and 179 for examples of this.

Q. Can this controller fire the Quest "Q2" ingiters?

A. Yes. Click Here for more information about the Quest Q2 igniters.

Q. Can this controller be used to ignite Aerotech Copperhead and First Fire Jr Igniters?

A. Yes. It works GREAT on all types of igniters!

Q. How does the Go-Box differ from the Aerotech Interlock Launch Controller?

A. The Aerotech Interlock controller has a lot longer wire than the Go-Box. We recommend it whenever there may be a chance that younger children may be launching rockets, because it has more safety features.

Q. Does this controller come with a launch pad ?

A. No. You'll need to purchase the launch pad seperately. We offer a couple of choices. The Aerotech Mantis Launch Pad, and the Estes Porta Pad-E.

Q. Is this controller overkill for smaller models?

A. It depends. I personally like to use a 12V car battery with all my rockets. You won't have to search around your house looking for good batteries. But the Sky Controller is a good alternative for smaller rockets where you can't drive your car right up to the launch pad. Click Here for more information.
