What Makes the SkyAngle Parachutes Different?
You're looking for high power chutes because you probably had a major parachute malfunction on your last flight, right?
Are you worried you might rip or shred your next high-power rocket's parachute? You probably seen it also happen any number of times to other flyers too, didn't you?
High power rockets, being very heavy and flying at high speeds, put extreme stresses on their parachutes. And because of this, they suffer more than their fair share of malfunctions that usually result in the rocket landing hard and being severely damaged. Not only do you lose a rocket, but the embarassment is almost unbearable.
Good news! These problems have been finally solved with the trusted SkyAngle brand of parachutes.
The SkyAngle parachutes use a unique "extended-panel" design. What that means is that it is basically a flat circular top panel, and triangular wedges on the sides where the suspension lines are attached. The triangular wedges take up most of the loads, and it allows far fewer suspension lines than other parachute designs. This reduces the chances of the lines getting all tangled up while your packing the chute for flight. The wedges are overlapped at the corners so that there isn't any stress points on the canopy where a tear might start.
In addition, the suspension lines (made from 3/8"-wide mil-spec wowen tubular nylon, with a rated capacity of 950 lbs), run over the top of the canopy to provide exceptional strength.
Finally, the parachute is designed to spin during descent, which creates some lift forces that actually slow the descent rate of the parachute compared to chutes of similar sizes. Because of this spinning nature, each parachute comes with a heavy-duty swivel (rated at 1,500 lbs) to keep the lines from twisting up during descent.
Suspension lines are sewn to the cloth for extra strength.
The material of the canopy is the same heavy-duty 1.9 oz. per square yard, rip-stop nylon that is used on man-rated hot-air balloons. Additionally, it is coated with silicon to keep it from sticking together when damp or in cold weather, and to decrease the porosity (the amount of air flow through the cloth). This increases the drag coefficient of the parachute, meaning your rocket will come down slower with a smaller diameter chute.
The SkyAngle chutes come in two styles, the Classic II, and the CERT-3. The Classic II have three suspension lines, each made from 3/8"-wide tubular nylon.
The CERT-3 style are used on the heavier rockets, and have four suspension lines, made from heavier 5/8"-wide tubular nylon. In addition, there is a metal ring sewn into the top of the canopy where you can attach a pilot chute to putt this bigger parachute out of the rocket.

What you'll also like about the SkyAngle parachutes is that they don’t suffer the unstable flopping, pulsation or collapse sometimes seen in other brands. And they are made in the USA!
SkyAngle parachutes been subjected to a number of manned drop tests by an independent authority on aerodynamic decelerators for the accurate determination of capacity. With thousands of successful deployments out there, SkyAngle Parachutes have proven to be superior in strength and reliability. The manufacturer warranties the parachute from defects in the material or construction. So you know this is the good stuff.

Spice up the descent portion of your flight with an eye-popping colorful parachute! Why? Because the descent portion of the flight is more than 2/3 of the total time the rocket is in the air, and it doesn't have to be boring. You will dazzle your friends when they see these chutes blossom out the top of the rocket. The coolness of the launch will continue during the descent, all the way to touchdown.
These are real rip-stop nylon fabric chutes, so they have great strength and fantastic durability. Just like you'd expect from cloth parachutes, right?
What makes them different is that there is a fantastic pattern printed on the cloth before it is sewn. The colors soak into the white fabric, so the color shows through on both sides of the parachute. You can't tell which is the inside versus the outside, since the color is so vibrant on both sides of the fabric.
Another thing that is different on these parachutes is that the suspension lines are thinner compared to other brands of nylon parachutes. The advantage of this is that they pack up into a smaller bundle, so you can use them in skinnier rockets and still be assured they are loose enough to eject without plugging up the tube. Other manufacturers use thicker string because it is easier to sew onto the canopy. But we've solved that problem, so thinner lines are used, and they are just as strong as the bulky ones.

Choose from three popular sizes, 24" diameter, 36" diameter, and the huge 58" diameter chute that is so huge, it seems to blot out the sun. And the price? You're going to be shocked how low it is compared to a multi-panel chute, which has a starting price of $25 for a small 24 inch diameter chute. Take a look at the chart below to see our great prices on these high quality parachutes.

Multi-Colored Plastic Parachute
10 inch hexagon
P/N: 29121
Price: $3.22
This colorful chute is great for smaller rockets. It is small enough to keep those everyday rockets from drifting away. It can also be trimmed down to an eight-inch diameter circular chute for use in skinnier rockets, like the Apogee Blue Streak. Made from 1-mil thick polyethylene plastic. Comes with thick cotton string for the shroud lines, and tear-resistant hole reinforcement rings.

Nothin' fancy here -- ok -- so they are nothing more than black plastic garbage bags... But they are the "Double Strength" variety, so they are stronger than most others, and very thin too: only .8 MIL (20.3 micro-m). So when you are in a hurry and don't have time to cut your own chutes, these will come in handy. The black color is for high visibility - you can see them for miles as your model floats away. They are also "precision" cut hexagons, so all the sides and angles are very exact, giving you a uniform shape (the measurement of the size is made across the flats, and not corner-to-corner). Each comes with shroud line and 6 little reinforcement rings that make line attachment easy and makes the attachment very strong.
The price isn't bad either. Compare our $5.78 price for the 24 inch chute against Estes' (their catalog shows a price of $8.19).

DynaStar Plastic Parachutes
This is a monster-size plastic parachute! At 32 inches across the flat edges, this is the largest printed plastic parachute ever made. Because it was designed for larger rockets, it has two extra suspension lines so it can safely handle heavier loads. That is eight suspension lines, instead of the standard 6 for the chutes listed above. Designed for Dyna-Star Mid-Power Model Rockets, it includes instructions, reinforcement rings, and heavy-duty cotton cord for the suspension lines. Approximate assembled weight: 21 grams.

Other items that people have found useful:
Nomex Wadding
While not required, this would be a useful addition to this kit. If you don't use a heat shield, you'll have to use disposable wadding to protect the parachute from the heat of the ejection charge. And for a large diameter kit like this, it will take a lot of disposable wadding.
Sky Angle Parachute Deployment Bags
A deployment bag is a device to help ensure that parachute inflates properly and in the correct order. It forces the lines to completely stretch out first, and then the canopy is released so that it can properly inflate. It also minimizes the loads on the suspension lines to prevent tears, and it gives additional protection from the heat of the ejection charges. If you're doing high power rockets, you really need this extra insurance to make your project a success.
