See the video below for help in selecting rocket motors. Rocket motors are sold separately from the kit. If you are unsure which one to pick, start with the one recommended for the First Flight, and then another for a more impressive launch. Most motors listed in this chart are available through Apogee Components. For other motors that are not listed here, download the RockSim file to see if it will work in this rocket kit. See also Technical Publication #28 for guidance on selecting appropriate rocket engines other than those listed in this chart. If you don't already have Technincal Publication #28, give us a call, and we'll be happy to let you download it free (you have to ask though).

Quasar One Patriot

The MIM-104 Patriot is a surface-to-air missile (SAM) system, used by the United States Army and several allied nations. It is manufactured by the Raytheon Company of the United States. The Patriot System replaced the Nike Hercules system as the U.S. Army's primary High to Medium Air Defense (HIMAD) platform, and replaced the MIM-23 Hawk system as the U.S. Army's medium tactical air defense platform. In addition to these roles, Patriot has assumed the role as the U.S. Army's anti-ballistic missile (ABM) platform, which today is Patriot's primary mission.

Patriot uses an advanced aerial interceptor missile and high performance radar systems. Patriot was developed at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, which had previously developed the Safeguard ABM system and its component Spartan and Sprint missiles.

The name "Patriot" is a backronym of Phased Array TRacking Intercept Of Target.

The Quasar One Patriot scale model is a huge kit for advanced fliers who want a quick and simple build to hone their clustering skills. You can fly this kit with black powder C and D motors, but the real excitement is in the 24mm composite motors listed above.

The burn time for the Apogee Medalist E6 is more than six seconds. Launching this baby from a large pad on motors like this feels a lot like being at the real Redstone Arsenal or White Sands. You'll have everyone in earshot staring, pointing, and yelling. Put three F12 Blackjacks in the foil-lined motor tubes and you'll never hear the end of it from your friends.

If you've been thinking about moving up into clustered composites, this is your ticket. This is one sweet rocket. You might even draw some attention from the local neighborhood watch.

Even though it looks complex, it is easy to build and paint. To get this cool look all you have to do is paint the rocket white and the tail section red. The high-quality self adhesive decals provide the rest of the detail!

Impress your friends with this incredible scale missile! This is sure to become one of your favorite rockets to fly and to display.

Why is this Kit a Skill Level 3?

The Patriot is a very straightforward build, with plastic nose cone, surface mount pre-cut balsa fins, and build-it-yourself parachute recovery. Graduating to clustered composite motors is not something you want to do with a skill level two kit. It makes sense to have built a few other kits (and a two-motor black powder cluster) before you tackle this one.

Quasar designed this kit to fly on only C, D, and E black powder motors. But we can't help ourselves. This rocket just begs for D, E, and F composite clusters. The only thing it needs to kick it up a notch is a Kevlar shock cord mount fastened to the motor mount instead of the paper side-wall anchor provided in the kit.

Kit Features
Excellent instructions, quick build, 1/4" launch lugs for higher power launches, quality parts. This kit is ready for prime time...

The high-quality plastic nose cone is eight inches long! It's a scale ogive shape that gives tremendous performance during high-speed flights. Plastic gives you a quick and easy build, and it's extremely durable to withstand many hard landings.

The body tube is a thick-walled, high-quality high power tube with small spirals that make finishing quick and easy. It's one-piece and 34" long, so there's no seam to fill and finish. It's durable enough to last for many flights and years of service.

The top-notch 24mm clustered motor mount has quality spring steel clips for quicker prep in the field, thick laminated paper centering rings for years of service, and engine blocks for better control of the thrust. A lot of kit motor mounts we've built require copious sanding, especially with clusters, but here everything fits nicely, which makes the build go quick.

The motor tubes are foil lined, which allows them to dissipate heat better, resulting in longer service. Truly a premium system.

Nose cone bolt showcases the seriousness of the recovery system. Extra-sturdy elastic pitches in, too.

Pre-cut balsa fins make building this kit easy and precise. Balsa is durable and lightweight, which results in a very stable flight. We recommend carefully sanding the root edge to make sure the fins are perfectly straight before mounting.

Here's what sets Quasar One rockets apart from your average kit. The self-adhesive decals are phenomenal! In this kit, you get SIX sheets of high-quality full-color decals. They wrap around the body tube and give the kit an incredible "finished" look you can't get without great decals. They differentiate your finished Patriot from the rest of your fleet, and they give this kit tremendous value.

The Quasar parachute sets this kit apart from the run-of-the-mill. The plastic is a bright color for high visibility at a half mile altitude and is thicker plastic than most manufacturers use for better durability. A swivel is included. The tough shock cord is elastic, and reinforcement rings are included. A deluxe system for a bargain price.

When this parachute pops, kids and adults all over the range scream with delight, and when this kit slowly rocks to the ground, it makes everyone remember why rocketry is so fun.

To see how the Quasar One Patriot rocket looks and performs with in each motor configuration, download the FREE RockSim design file (click here). The RockSim software is used to open this file. If you don't have RockSim, try the FREE 30-day trial version. Windows and Macintosh versions are both available (click here).

What is a RockSim Design file? The RockSim software gives you a lot of information about the flight characteristics of this rocket: how high, how fast, where it will land, how will it react to wind, etc. The "design file" is intended to save you time. All the parameters (size, shape, weight, fin design, etc.) of this rocket have already been entered into the RockSim program, and saved as an electronic database file. You can just open it up in your copy of RockSim and start loading different rocket motors to run launch simulations. It's fun and educational to see the rocket zoom skyward, even before you built it.
