See the video below for help in selecting rocket motors. Rocket motors are sold separately from the kit. If you are unsure which one to pick, start with the one recommended for the First Flight, and then another for a more impressive launch. Most motors listed in this chart are available through Apogee Components. For other motors that are not listed here, download the RockSim file to see if it will work in this rocket kit. See also Technical Publication #28 for guidance on selecting appropriate rocket engines other than those listed in this chart.

Sky Needle: Surprisingly Fun!

This is a huge kit, one of the tallest we carry, but it's lightweight, with truly impressive flights on D and E motors. Pack it with an F an it will go nearly out of sight.
Most of us want to have the tallest rocket on the range, because being the center of attention is great. When I unload the Sky Needle to prepare it for launch, I always have people cluster around to gaze at its tallness, and kids always ask, "Wow, are you really gonna fly that"? One of the reasons I love this business is the obvious sense of wonder in kids' voices and faces.
The Apogee Medalist E6 is the ultimate special effects motor for this long, tall rocket. The burn time is a long, long six-plus seconds. People on the range yell, "It's still going!" You may want to get an ambulance, because even the high power guys' heads will swivel around involuntarily, "Holy Cow, what kind of motor did you have in that thing?"
Load up an F12 Blackjack and you'll experience the guilty pleasure of a thunderous black column of smoke.
If you've been thinking about moving up into composites, this is your ticket. This is the perfect rocket for it. The price is very low for such a tall, high performance rocket, too.
Even though it looks complex, it is easy to build and paint. As tall as it is, there are only two body tubes (it comes in a really long package), so it's a lot stronger than some competing "tall and skinny" designs, that have four body tubes. To get the same cool look we achieved in our photos, all you have to do is paint the rocket green and the nose cone metallic. The high-quality self adhesive decals provide the rest of the detail!
I have a lot of fun flying my Sky Needle. It is easy and quick to prep, flies arrow-straight every time, and recovers nicely. It looks so impressive taking off that you soon forget how inexpensive it is. Sky Needle is for fliers who want to make a bold statement; with a "taller-than-you" stature, a bright color scheme, and incredible performance, this rocket impresses everyone on the range.
This surprising beauty is absolutely, positively going to blow your friends away! Build the Sky Needle today and pierce the sky. It's sure to become one of your all-time favorite fliers.

Why is this Kit a Skill Level 2?
Sky Needle is a very straightforward build, with plastic nose cone, surface mount pre-cut balsa fins, and build-it-yourself parachute recovery. Graduating to composite motors is not something you want to do with a skill level one kit. It makes sense to have built a couple of other kits before you tackle this one. This kit gets lots of attention. You'll proudly display it as the centerpiece of your fleet. It's one fun rocket, with a lighthearted color scheme and sharply good looks.
Excellent instructions, quick build, 3/16" launch lugs for higher power launches, quality parts. This kit has it all...
The high-quality plastic nose cone is an ogive shape that gives tremendous performance during high-speed flights. Plastic gives you a quick and easy build, and it's very durable to withstand many hard landings.
The top-notch 24mm motor mount has a quality spring steel clip for quicker prep in the field, thick laminated paper centering rings for years of service, and an engine block for better control of the thrust. The motor tube is a premium foil lined tube that dissipates heat quickly and is designed for longer life. Everything fits nicely, which makes the build go quick.
Pre-cut balsa fins make building this kit easy and precise. Balsa is durable and lightweight, which results in a very stable flight. The self-adhesive decals add some strength for those high-power flights.
Here's what sets Quasar One rockets apart from your average kit. The self-adhesive decals are phenomenal! In this kit, you get six sheets of bright, high-quality full-color decals. They cover the fins, wrap around the body tube, and give the kit an incredible "finished" look you can't get without great decals. They differentiate your finished Sky Needle from the rest of your fleet, and they give this kit tremendous value.
One note about this particular kit. If you want the "Sky Needle" name on your rocket, you have to cut out each letter. I'm betting most of you won't take the time to do that. You'll get no guilt trip from me, though. Quasar provides letters for two name applications, but I only put one on our display model.

The Quasar parachute sets this kit apart from the run-of-the-mill. The plastic is brightly colored for high visibility and is thicker plastic than most manufacturers use for better durability. A swivel is included. The shock cord is elastic, and reinforcement rings are included. A deluxe system for a bargain price.
When this parachute pops, kids all over the range scream with delight, and when this kit slowly rocks to the ground, it makes everyone remember why rocketry is so fun.

Frequently Asked Questions about theQuasar One Sky Needle kit:
Q. What launch pad should I use to launch the Quasar One Sky Needle?
A. We recommend the Sky Launch System. This rocket flies just fine off this inexpensive launch pad. You may want to get a 6 foot long 3/16" rod, though, especially if you plan on using C11 motors.
Q. What if the I launch this rocket half a mile high and never see my reload casing again?
A. Oh, yeah. That's why we sell single-use motors.
Q. I'd like to split this in half and epoxy a bulkhead in the central coupler so it's easier to transport in 3-foot sections and less susceptible to damage, while providing a long, tall payload bay. Does this sound like a good idea for the Sky Needle?
A. We recommend this build option. In addition to the benefits listed above, there is less air for the ejection charge to compress, resulting in more reliable ejection of the parachute.

Q. I need help selecting motors. What should I do?
- A. Watch this YouTube video.
Q. Instead of picking motors from the above chart, can you teach me how to do it myself?
- A. Yes. We encourage you to learn the proper motor selection technique. Please watch our YouTube video that will walk you step-by-step through the process (click here).

To see how the Quasar One Sky Needle rocket looks and performs with in each motor configuration, download the FREE RockSim design file (click here). The RockSim software is used to open this file. If you don't have RockSim, try the FREE 30-day trial version. Windows and Macintosh versions are both available (click here).

What is a RockSim Design file? The RockSim software gives you a lot of information about the flight characteristics of this rocket: how high, how fast, where it will land, how will it react to wind, etc. The "design file" is intended to save you time. All the parameters (size, shape, weight, fin design, etc.) of this rocket have already been entered into the RockSim program, and saved as an electronic database file. You can just open it up in your copy of RockSim and start loading different rocket motors to run launch simulations. It's fun and educational to see the rocket zoom skyward, even before you built it.
