Quest Economy Rocket Motors

Quest Motors

Quest Aerospace makes a reliable rocket motor that is great for most rocket kits. They are particularly great if you are on a tight budget!

These are an easy-to-ignite black-powder propellant rocket engine. They are all the standard 18mm diameter motors that are 2-3/4 inches long - which are the same size as the "regular-size" Estes rocket engines. The big difference is that they are lower in price. They will loft your rockets just as high, and just as fast as the Estes motors. Since they are black powder, they produce lots of thick, puffy gray smoke - making them easy to follow up into the air.

All the motors come three to a package. They include the new Quest Q2 igniters, which can also be purchased separately.

We also stock the "value" packs of motors, which come in packages of 25. These value packs are great for schools, scouts and youth groups, because it really knocks down the
price per flight. They include motors, igniters and wadding!

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. Why don't you ship rocket motors to countries outside the USA?

A. There are too many shipping regulations. We're a small company, and we don't have the manpower to track the regulations for each country in the world. So to keep our prices as low as possible, we only ship to USA customers.

Q. Can you ship motors to me by this weekend?

A. All rocket motors must be shipped by surface transportation (truck). While we ship the motors usually the same day the order comes in, you should plan extra time for the postal service to deliver them via third class mail (Parcel Post).

Q. Which igniters should I buy if I want spares for these motors listed on this page?

A. Get the Quest "Q2G2" igniters. Click Here for more information.

Q. What is Recovery Wadding, and why do I need it?

A. Click Here for more information about Recovery Wadding. Note: The packages of Quest motors listed here on this page do contain a small amount of wadding.

Q. How is maximum lift-off weight determined?

A. The maximum recommended lift-off weight for each delay depends on the size of the rocket, its drag coefficient, launch angle, and the wind conditions at launch. We recommend running a RockSim computer simulation for each rocket design and launch conditions to select the proper motor delay. For help selecting the correct delay time, see Apogee Technical Publication #28.

Q. What does the "P" mean on the D5-P motor?

A. The "P" means the motor is plugged. It does not contain a delay or an ejection charge. Note: The wrapper on the motor (see photo to the right) shows a "0" delay. That is incorrect. This is a PLUGGED motor. At this time, Quest does not offer a zero-second delay motor.

Q. What are the little red tubes for in the picture above?

A. They are little plastic tubes. You deform them and shove them into the nozzle to hold the igniter in place.

Q. I need something to convert my kit to allow me to use these smaller diameter motors. What should I do?

A. Check out all of the Apogee Motor Mount Kits!

Q. I have some old Quest motors, and they have these funny looking igniters in the package. How do you ignite the motor with them?

A. These are called Tiger Tail igniters, and they are similar to the Aerotech Copperhead igniters. Just watch our short video (click here) on the installation precautions of the Tiger Tail igniter. This will insure successful operation of the motor.
How to install and ignite a Tiger Tail igniter.

Piston Launchers

Get another 5% increase in altitude just by launching from a piston launcher! A piston launcher converts the hot exhaust gases from the rocket engine into high-pressure that kicks the rocket into the air at a faster velocity. This recycling of the exhaust gases is cool, and it gives your rocket a higher flight.
